Women in Tech: My Journey at Icinga

by | Jan 22, 2025

Four years ago I joined Icinga. Back then, everything was new to me: a new team, a new industry, and an exciting challenge. Today, four years later, I look back on an incredible, inspiring journey – one that has taught me so much, both professionally and personally, about what it means to be a woman in the tech industry.

The Beginning: Curiosity, Courage, and a Non-Tech Background

When I joined Icinga, I wasn’t just coming from a completely different industry—B-to-C market research—I was also over 50 years old, bringing with me a wealth of life experience but little exposure to tech. From the very beginning, I felt like I was ticking multiple diversity boxes: gender, age, and a non-technical background.

This lack of a traditional tech profile made me wonder: “Will I find my place here?” and “Are there any women in tech I can look up to?” The answer to the latter was, unfortunately, no—not many. Yet, Icinga’s supportive culture made all the difference. My team welcomed me warmly, valued my perspective, and encouraged me to grow.

The Challenges: Adapting, Learning, and Staying Open

Of course, challenges are part of any career, and I’ve had my fair share. Being surrounded by predominantly tech-savvy men can sometimes feel a little intimidating, especially when I find myself grappling with new tools or technical concepts. I admit, there are moments when I feel vulnerable, but I’ve learned to embrace this as part of being human. After all, every new challenge is an opportunity to grow.

What makes it easier is working for a company like Icinga—a place where being human and making mistakes is not only accepted but also seen as an essential part of the learning process. This mindset has given me the confidence to tackle new tasks, even when they feel outside my comfort zone.

Growth and Learning: A Dynamic Role

When I started at Icinga, my role was focused solely on partner management. Over the last four years, however, my responsibilities have grown significantly, and my job has evolved into what I can only describe as true “job enrichment.” Today, I also take care of our Customer Stories, help organize Icinga events, and contribute to marketing efforts like whitepapers and newsletters. In a small, agile team like ours, wearing multiple hats is part of the experience—and I love it.

Why Women in Tech Matter

The tech industry holds immense potential to change the world – but this potential can only be fully realized if the industry is diverse. Women, people from non-traditional backgrounds, and those with different life experiences all bring fresh perspectives, creative ideas, and unique approaches to solving problems. For me, it’s clear: the more diverse a team, the better the outcomes.

Progress Worth Celebrating

One of the most exciting changes I’ve seen since joining Icinga is the growth in diversity within our own team. When I started, I was one of very few women at the company. Today, I’m thrilled that three more women have joined us—two developers and one in marketing. YAY! It’s a small but significant step in the right direction, and it makes me hopeful for the future.

My Message to Women Considering a Career in Tech

To anyone considering a career in tech, I encourage you to take the leap. It doesn’t matter if you don’t fit the traditional mold of a “tech person.” Whether you’re coming from a different background, feel you’re too old, or think you lack the right skills—there is a place for you here.

Seek out companies that value diversity and inclusivity, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. Growth comes from challenges, and you’ll find a community that supports you every step of the way.

I’m proud to be part of Icinga, a company that has given me the space to grow and contribute in ways I never imagined. Here’s to breaking barriers, building connections, and inspiring the next generation of women in tech.

If this resonates with you and you’re looking for an opportunity to join a supportive and diverse team, why not explore the career opportunities at Icinga? Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, there’s room to grow with us.

For those who are just beginning their tech journey, consider starting with an apprenticeship at our partner NETWAYS or experiencing a day as a tech professional through the Girls’ Day program. It’s a fantastic way to explore the field of IT and see what a career in tech could look like for you.
