Advanced Icinga Director for Practitioners
Learn how to structure, distribute, and delegate Icinga Director configuration in large environments
Custom variables, configuration at scale, satellites, multi-source imports, and permissions
The first session started from a clean installation and ended with import sources and sync rules. That is enough for a first setup. This session looks at what comes after: an Icinga Director that manages many hosts, several satellites, and configuration that more than one team works on.
The session walks through the parts of Icinga Director that matter once a setup grows: custom variables and the new model in Icinga Director 1.12 with full dictionary support, template hierarchies and apply rules, satellites and zones, import pipelines with several sources, and permissions that give each team its own part of the configuration.
One question runs through the whole session: which approach fits which situation. A single service, an apply rule or a service set. One import source or several. A zone per datacenter, per network segment or per team. The answer depends on the size and shape of the environment, and we show where each option holds up and where it starts to cost maintenance time.
