Icinga monitors:
200+ hosts, about 2000 services with 1 instance in failover mode

What does Icinga do there?
Our team uses Icinga2 to monitor the infrastructure (Linux VMs, Docker containers, and all the services) that power a large percent of the main website along with several other supporting sites.

Why Icinga?
First and foremost, the Icinga team and community for their amazing support. We spent a long time evaluating other monitoring solutions but Icinga2 stood out with the object-based configuration format. The ability to use macros, assignments, inheritance, etc has allowed us to scale and have monitoring with ease. We also benefit from the metrics that are exported to Graphite. The new Icinga Web 2 interface is easy to work with, looks amazing, and helps us respond to issues faster.

Why Icinga?
Consisting of two Icinga2 servers in the master zone and six Icinga2 satellites located on different continents, our Icinga2 infrastructure provides monitoring for about 4000 devices and 35.000 services.

From basic checks for Linux and Windows operating systems, VMWare environments, databases like MSSQL, Oracle, MongoDB up to custom scripts developed for 3PAR storage and network switches, Icinga2 help us to maintain our Infrastructure at a higher level and offer the best services for the company.

I consider that Icinga2 together with Grafana and ElasticStack is the best monitoring solution that we could choose

Icinga monitors:
70,000+ hosts, 550,000+ services in a distributed setup with 5 clustered Icinga 2 servers

What does Icinga do there?
Icinga monitors our network management servers and virtualized infrastructure which manage our fibre optical network, DSL connection and lots more of different technologies.
Icinga is currently deployed in 5 independent instances to separate load and team responsibilities. Our default setup is a Master HA cluster with satellite servers distributed in different network segments.

Why Icinga?
Icinga is just a great customizable tool to monitor your infrastructure and integrate a big variety of different hardware and applications. We work with quite a few different vendors who provide their own hardware and software stack and this can be difficult to integrate into your existing environment.

Icinga2 has a great DSL which is way more flexible then Icinga1 and Nagios.

This project is driven by a great community and a tireless effort to make it better and better with every version.

Why Icinga?
Icinga replaced Tivoli. We were looking for a highly scalable and flexible monitoring system, which could be easily distributed for high availability. Icinga’s dynamic, flexibly customisable user interface as well as continuous and transparent development sealed the deal.

Our monitoring platform is based on Icinga2. It monitors all our IT infrastructure (physical UNIX & Windows servers, VMs, EMC data storage, URL checks, TCP ports, Certificates, CIFS)

Why Icinga?
We were experimenting high delay in check queues with our existent Nagios platform, and it was a pain to manage.
Icinga2 has all we wanted: High availability enviroment, very easy to scale, nice web interface, compatible with our custom script checks.

Icinga monitors:
1500+ hosts, 40000+ services in a cluster setup

What does Icinga do there?
We have two separated Icinga2 installations. One for Our DataCenter infrastructure and one for our cloud environment.
Both installations running as a two node ha cluster. In addition to the ha cluster the datacenter installation has two satellites running which are located in a secured network zone
We are monitoring all our Solaris, Suse Linux and RedHat Linux systems, AVAYA telephone system, diverse hardware environment, Sensors and our Polycom Videoconferencing system with icinga2.
Our customers are notified (if they like) by incident ticket system, email, telephone call, SMS or instant messaging.

Why Icinga?
After searching for a successor for our Sun Solaris systems monitored by SunMC we decided to use Icinga1. After implementing we got a hugh amount of requests to monitor non-Sun systems, too, and we implemented it easily. After running Icinga1 for a few years it is successed by Icinga2 completely with all advantages of the HA Cluster functionality and new features.

Icinga monitors:
1000+ hosts, 5000+ services in a cluster setup

What does Icinga do there?
Icinga 2 is replacing our Nagios servers. They keep an eye on all important equipment in our datacenters and some customer equipment.

Why Icinga?
Icinga 2 makes everything easier. We were able to cut down our old Nagios config lines with 85% using simple variables and using ‘apply’ to objects. Nevertheless the migration was very time consuming because of the large amount of custom plugins. Our setup is nicely organised and easy to use. In the long run it will save us a lot of time. Furthermore the platform is really fast now. Forcing checks on Nagios took between 5 and 10 minutes and is nearly instant now. And last but not least, clustering makes it easier to upgrade the systems because no Nagios failover is required.

Icinga2 is monitoring our entire infrastructure, including traffic, uptime and SLAs in our core, metro and access networks. Also Icinga2 monitors our datacenters all the way from the virtualization to the specific services on each server.

Why Icinga?
We chose Icinga because it has all the features we need from a monitoring system, and also because it is open source, extremely flexible and easy to integrate with other systems. We have an inventory-system that populates Icinga2 with hosts and services automatically, and we actually never touch the Icinga2-servers. Icinga monitors:
100+ hosts, > 600 services with 1 instance (standalone)

What does Icinga do there?
We monitor a wide range of devices, from Windows Servers, to Linux in different flavours, to NetApps, Mitel PBX, VMware, HP ProCurve and Cisco networking devices and so on on 4 different locations here in Italy. We needed a more powerful, flexible solution and mostly a better supported and maintained one. And, of course, we also needed an OpenSource solution, according to our Government Guidelines.

Why Icinga?
Few years ago we were using proprietary software for monitoring, but it wasn’t flexible enough to accomplish our needs, we have a very wide and eterogeneous pool of devices. That’s why after some researches, we decided to switch on first attemp to Nagios. But we found it was bit “lazy” on new releases and didn’t look so actively maintained, which is crucial at enterprise level. So we took a look at the Icinga fork and we basically loved it at first sight. All we can say is that we didn’t miss a single notification since we use Icinga.

What does Icinga do there?
I installed Icinga with PNP4Nagios. Immediately after installation my boss and I found problems we didn’t even know about. One was a flapping router which a firmware upgrade fixed.
With PNP4Nagios we can track disk space usage from research data generated by scientists and predict upgrades required so that a budget can be assessed and planned.
On one of our file shuttle servers we found that one of the processors was running at full capacity from interrupts and can be fixed from a kernel patch or OS upgrade.
We find problems and fix them every day from the data provided by Icinga and our reliability has increased.
Why Icinga?
Originally I was looking at Nagios because that is what my boss had used in the past. However I found Icinga (can’t remember from where) and was delighted to see the improved features and functionality it provided.

What does Icinga do there?
A year ago, we had no reliable source of information in our network on the status of our servers; we were missing a monitoring tool / software. The challenge was to keep the costs down, the lower the better.
Why Icinga?
As I informed myself of the suitable software to meet these needs, I found many to choose from and chose Nagios 3.2.1. While looking for help on Nagios-Portal.org, I discovered Icinga. Nagios had already given me the foundational knowledge, and I spontaneously decided to opt for Icinga, given what I had read about Nagios® update philosophy. The decision has since paid off; we have been using Icinga in our company network for a year now and have already avoided 3 server failures.

Icinga monitors:
500 hosts, 5000 services with Icinga2
What does Icinga do there?
Icinga2 was choosen to replace old version of Nagios (3.2) or bad implemented Centreon system.
The first project is Spationav where Nagios 3.2/centreon was replaced by Icinga2 2.4/thruk 2/pnp4nagios/Nagvis. Around 100 sites,, 400 IPs but not yet centralised. It will be done done in the future.
The second project is the Suez canal VTS ( Vessel traffic system), the existing Nagios running on 3 servers was replaced by 1 server box ( Dell optiplex 3020 micro) running Icinga2/Thruk2/pnp4nagios/Influxdb/grafana. Today, 150 IPs are monitired by 3000 services.
The work done on IC2 is expected to be included in all our new maintenance/monitoring systems.
The plugins are most managed by ‘centreon-plugins’ which is dealing the job very well; It is not necessary to manage many different plugins coming from many diffents origins. It is very usefull for the perfdata which are not useally correctly written and hard to be managed by pnp4nagios
Icinga will be in the future the monitoring system of our maintenance solution.
Why Icinga?
The reason of why IC2 was choosen :

  • The configuration files are using more modern scipting system
  • The project is active
  • Posibility to manage clusting/multi sites
  • Easy to integrated with our deployement system ( puppet)

The other projects shinken/centreon/neamon/nagios even for advnced stuff are still 100% Nagios compatible, but the configuration files were designed a long time ago.
The use of “for services” with table makes very easy for us to integrate and designed a new system w/ IC2, only one file to generate via puppet

A natural choice after years using Nagios.

Icinga monitors:
50+ hosts, 650+ services with 1 Icinga 2 instance
What does Icinga do there?

  • Basic monitoring of hosts
  • Monitoring of various voice specific equipment like Softswitches or a Session Border Controllers
  • Monitoring of basic IP-Equipment
  • Providing performance data via checks and pushing these via graphite writer into graphite

Why Icinga?
Mostly because of the Open Source Monitoring Conference and the good impression I got there. But within using Icinga2 the graphite writer is owesome and the “assign” rules are pretty handy. Also the distibuted monitoring, so without having to use nrpe, is great!

Icinga monitors:
around 500 hosts with 5000 services with multiple instances (distributed)
What does Icinga do there?
Around 500 hosts, dual master architecture. Approx. 5000 service checks.
Multiple servers in various locations (separate deployments)
Why Icinga?
We switched to Icinga from Nagios. We were looking for a scalable and easily configurable solution. Icinga is just great for doing more complicated service assignments. We also programmed our automated generation of the configuration, which is really simple – due to the Icinga config structure.

Icinga monitors:
240 hosts, 1600 services with 1 instance (distributed)
What does Icinga do there?
We use Icinga 2 to monitor our system and network infrastructure. From Unix over Windows up to HP ProCurve and other network devices like CISCO, APC NetBotz or PDUs.
Notifications going out over status lamp, mail and/or sms.
Why Icinga?
Icinga 1.x was my first contact with monitoring software. The Icinga community is great an I like the it. Icinga 2 is absolutely great to configure and use real time performance data for example with graphite and grafana.

Icinga monitors:
1800 hosts, 16000 services with 1 instance 5 workers (standalone)
What does Icinga do there?
Monitoring as it should! Real-time monitoring, notifications, providing customer monitoring access via icingaweb2. Monitoring host servers, VM’s, Cisco devices and many many more.
Both remote customer locations as well as our own datacenter infrastructure. Icinga is monitoring our MPLS Cloud network from core to customer. Using LConf as a configuration tool and nagstamon as a desktop tool to follow up on monitoring statuses.
Why Icinga?
After using Nagios for years, we were running against performance limits due to growth. This required us to start looking for an alternative, preferably with the least effort to migrate to and possibility to offload tasks to other servers.
Icinga was the perfect solution for our 2 main requirements and we’ve never regret we’ve took that decision years ago. Using 5 worker servers in combination with mod_gearman we never run into performance issues. Icinga has an active community and wide scope with regards to available monitoring scripts. It’s continuous development and focus on making monitoring accessible, visible and usable are very much appreciated by our staff.

Icinga monitors:
> 20 hosts, > 100 services with 2 instances (failover)
What does Icinga do there?
As a growing company making use of both traditional and cloud-based infrastructure, we need to always make sure that we are scaling resources appropriately while still providing effective redundancy and failover.
Why Icinga?
I’ve already had good experiences with Nagios and NRPE, but never liked Nagios® archaic dashboard interface. Icinga’s most recent web interface (1.7.0 as of this writing) provides for a much more intuitive/pleasant experience, and allows me to better visualize metrics that affect us both in the short- and long-term.

Icinga monitors:
20 hosts, 500 services with 2 instances (failover)
What does Icinga do there?
Icinga monitors the entire eXchange point switch infrastructure as well as the servers running the appropriate services in the background. The servers are virtualized XEN machines. We also monitor our dual-stack BGP peerings on routers and bird-routing-daemon.
Why Icinga?
Better response time than Nagios. Better web interface features than Nagios. Ease of use and good options for performance data integration.
