Monthly Snap September: Releases, User Stories and Icinga Camp New York

September brought new releases for Icinga 2 and Icinga Web 2. We’ve also announced Icinga Camp New York on December 5th, 2017. Community members worked hard to bring you Ruby and Python libraries while we also say hi to Nagstamon 3.0 this month.
One important thing first: We are so proud to see Icinga used in many places. This month Ricardo told us that a part of German Telekom is using Icinga 2 with >500.000 services in production. This makes us soooooooo proud ?

Events

We are proud to have found a spot at Microsoft for Icinga Camp New York on December 5th, 2017. Call for papers is still open, please submit your Icinga story! See you in NYC 🙂
Icinga Camp Berlin on March 8th, 2018 is not so far away too. We are looking forward to your talks on Icinga and enjoying #icingalove together.
If you happen to be in Zurich on November 6th, 2017, join the first Icinga meetup in Switzerland organised by our partner LinuxFabrik.
Bernd joined Percona Live this week with his talk about monitoring databases.

Products

We’ve released new versions for Icinga 2 and Icinga Web 2 this month. Icinga 2 v2.7.1 addresses a couple of bugs introduced in v2.7.0 and also fixes bugs requested by Icinga support partners. Icinga Web 2 v2.4.2 tackles an issue with acknowledgments without expire time and provides many more fixes.
We are currently planning for Icinga 2 v2.8 and Icinga Web 2 v2.5 later this year. More on coming features and changes soon. Note: The bottom up client mode is gone for v2.8 – plan your migration already.
Rumors do tell that we will have new releases for the Puppet modules soon. There’s also work underway with a sponsored feature in the Logstash output for Icinga. Another rumor says that Director 1.4 got more features for a new release soon.
Expect many more cool new features and updates in our OSMC talks and also the OSMC hackathon later this year!
 

Trainings and Partners

Documentation, books or community channels might sometimes be not enough to fully understand the capabilities of Icinga 2, Icinga Web 2, Director and more integrations. We have our official Icinga trainings which are held by Icinga professionals at our partners.
One could spot that there’s also good food and a relaxing atmosphere during these trainings 🙂

Users keep testing and using the Icinga-as-a-Service platform provided by our partner NETWAYS. Also checkout the new videos illustrating the capabilities of this service.


 

Integrations

Nagstamon 3.0 is released. Hooray!


 
Michael is test-driving a new REST API for NSClient++. He will be talking about in his OSMC talk too, I’ve heard 😉


 
Kevin is working on a Python library to incorporate the Icinga 2 API calls.
On the Ruby side, Bodo takes care of enhancing the Icinga 2 gem. Thank you both for your awesome community work!

Howtos

We’ve had a blog post over at the NETWAYS blog about hidden gems in Icinga Web 2. This also has been added into the documentation aside other huge documentation updates for 2.5.

There’s a new plugin for monitoring Cisco VPN active sessions on Icinga Exchange.

Stories

Assaf shared his story on Icinga. We are not a Nagios fork anymore, but a whole new project standing on our own. Watch the slides, it is totally worth it!

We’ve come a really long way with Icinga. Debian Stretch removed Nagios and now proposes Icinga as default.


 
Turning back the time a bit, I’ve found an old design draft from April 2014 – that time we designed and imagined how the cluster config sync could actually work. A hard time finishing everything for v2.0 but totally worth it 🙂


 
Seven years ago we’ve also put lots of energy into improving the old “Nagios CGIs”, known as “Icinga Classic UI”. We’ve learned a lot, and are putting that experience into Icinga Web 2 these days.


 
Icinga Web 2 provides theming support. Fellow community members have started to enhance Icinga Web 2 for their own needs 🙂
